Day 18: Appreciations and Inspirations

How is it Sunday already? This week has flown by, and May is just around the corner.

I think that Sundays are the perfect day to reflect on the highlights of the week, preparing you for the dreaded alarm the next morning. I have been complaining a lot this week, and I need to stop and give thanks for some of the good things in my life.

Appreciations

Lazy Sundays: Since starting my coaching company over a year ago, my weekends are normally filled with training sessions. Before I began my company, Everett and I would lounge around on the weekends being complete bums. We would stay in sweats most of the day, changing only to take a walk or get some food. Today the weather was cold and rainy. Miserable for most, but wonderful for me. Clients canceled or rescheduled. Lazy Sunday at last! Everett, Buckeye, and I napped for over three hours and watched a movie. The perfect solution to end a stressful week.

Cell Phones: Bizarre appreciation, right? However, I keep remembering life without cell phones and instant communication. I can only imagine what my parents and grandparents think of all the changes in the technology world. While there are drawbacks to instant contact, I appreciate that I can communicate immediately with my friends, family, or clients. I remember when I would go to a payphone hoping to catch my mom to tell her about a change in plans. Now, I could just text her. Pretty amazing.

Hugs: There is nothing like a good hug. I am a hugger. I give hugs freely and welcome them always. Hugs make bad days better and good days brighter. There were times this week where Everett, my dad, or my friends/coworkers gave me a hug without asking because they knew I needed one. Never underestimate the power of a hug.

Inspirations

My inspirations this week are three women in my life who are following their passions and dreams.

Singing her song: My personal trainer is a hilarious and intelligent woman who kicks my butt in the gym twice a week. Lauren has been a Physical Therapist and Personal Trainer for twenty years, but her real passion is singing. Everett and I went to see her perform this weekend. It was incredible to watch my friend who wears sweats every day transform into a beautiful and talented singer. She talked about pursuing both music and training, and she is making it work for her. I look forward to buying her cd one day.

Make ‘em Laugh: Some people are just funny. They see the hilarity in life’s most mundane moments. That is my best friend Priscilla. She is dripping with irony and has never met a pun she doesn’t like. We lived together in France for a eight months, and I could easily fill a book with outrageous stories…and one day probably will. Priscilla is a talented fashion designer. Before I met her, I knew she had a fashion degree. I figured that she would wear only designer clothes and look down on anyone who wasn’t chic. Totally not her. While she enjoys designing in New York, she has been itching to do her own thing and let her artistic creativity lead her. I’m anxiously awaiting the release of a web series she has been working tirelessly on. I have yet to get a sneak peak, but I will be posting clips as soon as I can. She wrote the script for the series, and I imagine that I will say, “one day I knew her when…” So proud of you, Pea!

Kids are Our Future: There are few things more heroic than taking a struggle in your life and using its lessons to help others. My Aunt Beth did just that. She and my Uncle Ron started Cherokee Creek Boys School (CCBS) in South Carolina, a therapeutic boarding school for middle school boys. Her passion, commitment to excellence, and vision inspire me daily. Cherokee Creek’s mission is to challenges boys and their families to discover what is real and true about themselves and the world around them. Every day, she strives to improve the school and help even more struggling boys. CCBS changes the lives of these boys, creating a safe, positive, and nurturing environment for them to thrive. She had a dream and turned it into a working reality with a lot of hard work, support, and some miracles. Thank you for helping all these families and for supporting me in my dreams!

Have a great week! I’m focusing on organization and cooking this week. Fingers crossed!

Celebrate the day!

  1. Thank you, Sarah! I am honored. And you inspire me! I have been proud of you always…and I know the challenges you have faced with your career where you gave much, much more than required and received insults in return. Then you took the risk and started your own company that followed your passion! Go look up Joseph Campbell’s definition of “hero’s journey” and see yourself there. And I couldn’t do what I do without an equally inspired and talented staff…with my daughter leading the pack! Life is so interesting. Isn’t it? XOXOXOX

  2. How often we need to be reminded to appreciate. Nothing (besides hugs) fills us with that internal sunshine that bathes us in joy. Tears flow in reading your choices. They are perfect in all ways. I will spend time today making my own list. You will be at the top of it. I love you.
